Victoria's Monash Gallery of Art will host a new retrospective celebrating Australian art photographer Carol Jerrems' unique vision of a Melbourne in the 1970s.

Drawn from the National Gallery of Australia’s massive holdings of the artist’s work, 'Carol Jerrems: photographic artist' tells the story of Jerrems’ complex and highly influential practice. This retrospective features more than 100 works, most of which have not been seen in Melbourne since Jerrems lived there during the late ‘60s and ‘70s.

Though she practised as an artist for a decade only, Jerrems' work earned her an important place in the history of Australian photography. Along with several other female photographers working in the 1970s, Jerrems' work challenged the dominant ideas of what a photographer was and how they worked and her compassionate and striking portrayal of the people involved in the social movements of the day have come to define Melbourne in a decade of great social and political upheaval.

The Monash Gallery of Art is the only Victorian venue to host 'Carol Jerrems: photographic artist', which will feature at the gallery from July 6 - September 30.
