  • Scott Bauer, Marcus moments, Shanan Worrall. Commercial diver Shanan Worrall riding a wave photographed is a very special north swell in Western Australia. This wave Shanan rode was a stand out for me in this session, one of the larger more perfect waves that came through. I was recovering from a shoulder operation and couldn't swim with my camera, but very grateful to shoot this session from the beach with the sand between my toes.

  • Mathew Tildesley, Nocturnal Impact. ‘Nocturnal Impact’ is part of a project called ‘The Nocturnal Series’. Named not just for the hour they were taken but also the obsession which consumed me, keeping me awake at night. Surf Flash Photography is so intriguing; you never know how the results will turnout. The light might be absorbed by the water, or highlight intricate details never noticed during daylight hours. ‘Nocturnal Impact’ was such a thick, heavy wave. Less graceful than the ones before, yet much more powerful. The lip exploded on impact, its echoes reverberating through me in the dark.

  • Scott Harrison, The Reward. A spot that a friend and I found that takes a bit of effort to get to. Needs the right swell and wind direction to come together for the backwash to really happen. We had been many times with ok results, but this morning everything lined up perfectly and I was rewarded with this split second moment in time under some amazing morning light

Nikon Australia has announced the finalists of the 2019 Surf Photo of The Year.

Ray Collins, Mountains. Swimming on the line between order and chaos. Mexico.
Ray Collins, Mountains. Swimming on the line between order and chaos. Mexico.

Captured by Australian photographers, locations in this year’s group include Noosa Heads, Bells Beach and Western Australia, and international locations include Ireland, Mexico and Indonesia.

Trent Mitchell, Jack MacRae. Inner Atlas, 2018. I felt intrigued to investigate the interconnection of humans with nature through the most pure form of wave riding, the primitive art of bodysurfing. How does it feel flowing at the perfect speed, immersed within the fluidity of the of the sea? What is revealed when one’s spirit expands into the space that surrounds? My aim to render the true essence of the human condition and a mirror of one’s self could only be captured within the moment and in a single breath. In a space that moved the subject and the viewer with equal pull.

A panel of 13 high-profile judges from within the surfing industry including Nikon Brand Ambassador Stephanie Gilmore were tasked with selecting the top 20 photo entries and top 3 video submissions based on the below criteria:

  • Innovation and creativity
  • Dramatic affect and sensory impact
  • Uniqueness
  • Creative composition

The winners for the Nikon Surf Photo and Video of the Year will be announced at the Surfing Australia Awards Night on April 2 on the Gold Coast.
