Who won the February 'Blue' photo competition?
More than 900 entries were submitted to Australian Photography's February 'Blue' photo competition attracted. But who won?
With more than 900 entries in our February 'Blue' photo competition, coming up with this month's winners was always going to be a challenge! Starting with 900 images we slowly whittled the shortlist down to 35 spectacular shots and hand-balled the toughest part of the task over to Facebook for the people's choice award, and this month's guest judge, Australian documentary photographer Anthony McKee.
"There was a wonderful scope of images among the finalists," said McKee. "Blue waterscapes, cool portraits, some blue eyes and a few blue (if not oversized) moons. There were also one or two images that played on the idea of blue as an emotional state."
In the end McKee selected Mitchell Pettigrew's image 'Just Keep Swimming', a deceptively simple shot of a school of blue fish swimming beneath a blue sky.
"There are a number of things I like about the photo including the soft blues and the almost random way this wave gives us a brief insight into the daily meanderings that happen mostly out of sight beneath the ocean's surface. This appears to be a simple photo, but it does give us a glimpse of a fragile ecosystem that is often ignored."
This month's People's Choice award goes to Brett Wood with our Facebook judges showing plenty of love (and more than 340 likes) for his stunning long-exposure landscape photo of Tasmania's The Nuggets, a small group of granite islands off the east coast of Tasmania near Freycinet Peninsula.
Congratulations to Mitchell Pettigrew, who has won an incredible 10TB BarraCuda Pro drive from Seagate valued at $789, and Brett Wood who has won a 12-month digital subscription to Australian Photography or Capture magazine.
