Canon confirms EOS R5 is coming with 8K, 20fps and IBIS
The rumours are true: Canon are working on a successor to the EOS R, and it will feature 8K video, 20fps burst shooting and on sensor image stabilisation.
Officially called the EOS R5, Canon have described the new camera as 'the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras' in the company’s EOS R System, and it will include a newly developed CMOS sensor that makes possible high-speed continuous shooting—up to approximately 20 frames per second (FPS) using an electronic shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS using a mechanical shutter.
In a first for a consumer camera, the EOS R5 will feature 8K video capture, as well as the ability to extract high-resolution still images from video footage and process 8K video into 4K.
Further, the EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with an image stabilisation (IS) system that integrates the camera’s in-body IS with IS systems on attached RF lenses. The camera will also feature dual media card slots and will support automatic transfer of image files from the device to the image.canon cloud platform.
Few other details about the R5 have been made public, but the announcement did come at the same time as a flurry of other announcements from Canon, the most significant of which is confirmation the company is also developing a total of nine RF lenses, all scheduled for release during 2020, including an intriguing sounding RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.
All this confirms on paper at least, that the EOS R5 may just be the full frame mirrorless camera Canon users have been waiting for.

The new full-frame mirrorless camera currently under development will fully leverage the advantages of the EOS R System to realise high-speed continuous shooting and 8K video recording and expanding the boundaries of visual expression. In addition, it can contribute to more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability. These enhancements and more will help the new camera elevate the EOS Series concept of “Speed, Comfort and High-image-quality” to a higher level.
