Canon launches C80 cinema camera

Canon has announced the EOS C80, a new RF lens mount cinema camera.

The mirrorless C80 is built around a 26MP full-frame Stacked CMOS sensor, the same as first unveiled in the EOS C400 earlier this year, but although it shares the sensor, it does lack some features of that more premium camera.

The sensor on the C80 however allows for 12-bit Cinema RAW full frame 6K capture with 16 stops of dynamic range. The C80 also features new MP4 video formats such as XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S.

Canon says the C80 features a triple base ISO of 800, 3200 and 12,800, helping with optimal image quality in changing environments. An intelligent auto-switching mode seamlessly transitions between these base ISO levels when capturing dynamic scenes, such as news segments or live sports events.

In addition to triple-base ISO, the updated sensor supports the newest version of Canon's dual-pixel autofocus, Dual Pixel AF II. It enlarges the area of the sensor that can be used for autofocus and includes the same AF zones found on the Cinema EOS C400.

Canon says the new AF system supports people and animal tracking, with much faster readout speeds improving the hit rate too.

Mirroring the form of the EOS C70, the EOS C80 features a redesigned and removeable top handle, and a new multi-function shoe. In addition, Canon says the camera introduces a brighter LCD panel which offers better visibility when used outdoors as well as an improved joystick design closer to the thumb for enhanced ease-of-use.

The EOS C80 is priced at $8,899 RRP and is scheduled to be available in Australia in November.
