Nikon announces videocentric NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ zoom lens

Nikon has announced the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ, a full-frame zoom lens designed for its Z-mount mirrorless system.

The lens covers a versatile focal length range from 28mm to 135mm and is equipped with a power zoom mechanism, a feature aimed at videographers who require smooth zooming control.

The inclusion of a zoom lever, a first for a NIKKOR Z lens, allows users to select from 11 different zoom speeds.

Nikon claims that the lens minimises shifts in focus position and centre of gravity when zooming, which could be beneficial for gimbal use and handheld shooting. It also supports remote control functionality via a computer or smartphone.

For video shooters, the lens offers features tailored to professional workflows, including compatibility with matte boxes and follow focus systems.

Additionally, Nikon’s Meso Amorphous Coat is applied to reduce flare and ghosting, while a stepping motor (STM) is used to provide quiet and fast autofocus performance. The lens is designed to limit focus breathing, an essential feature for smooth focus pulls in video production.

The minimum focus distance varies depending on the focal length, with a close-up capability of 0.34m at the wide end (28-50mm) and 0.57m at the telephoto end.

When paired with the Nikon Z9, users can take advantage of Hi-Res Zoom, which extends the field of view to an equivalent 270mm when shooting in 4K.

Additional customisation options include an adjustable zoom ring angle and direction, linear manual focus support, and programmable function buttons positioned for ease of use in both horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.

The lens also features Nikon’s fluorine coating on the front element to repel dust and moisture.

With its internal zoom design to maintain balance, power zoom functionality, and video-friendly optimisations, the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ appears to be positioned as a flexible option for hybrid shooters who need a balance between stills and video performance.

The lens weighs 1,120g without its tripod collar, and is 105 × 177.5mm long.

There is currently no mention of the release date or price for Australia, though the US price is $2,600, which should equate to roughly $4,130 (+GST). It is also noted to be released in US Springtime which would mean sometime in the next few months here.

You can find out more about the lens on the Nikon Australia website.
