Hi Kerry,
Years ago, when I was just starting out in photography, I learnt a rather interesting trick for photographing close-ups; it involved taking a wide-angle lens and holding it back to front on the camera. Believe it or not it lets you get really close to subjects like this bee. Of course, that was back in the days before lenses became electronic, and you had some level of control over the mechanics of the camera.
Nowadays, the best way of achieving close-up images as to actually invest in a macro lens. These lenses can be bought second-hand starting at just a couple of hundred dollars or new from about $400. If you plan on making close-up photography a keen focus of your work then I think it's are worth the investment.
That said, I certainly think you have done well enough with this photograph.
The one thing I would think about is cleaning up the background... that second flower we can see is distracting.
There are two ways you could have done this: by moving the flower in the background to one side, or by placing a large piece of card between these two flowers.
What is wonderful about macro photography is that it is a lot easier to manipulate the scene then shifting furniture for a portrait shoot!
All the best exploring this direction!
Cheers,
Anthony.
