Hi Matt,

Having tried myself to photograph pelicans a year ago, I know how hard it is to get a good photograph of them. I actually really like this capture; there is just enough separation between the pelican and the street lamp to leave the viewer wondering whether or not the bird will actually land safely.

Although you have supplied me a very low-resolution file, I would have to say that there is not a lot I would do to adjust the image. I think you should leave it as it is.

Now, you also ask if your work is of a professional standard; this is a rather difficult question to answer, particularly as I have only seen one of your photographs. If you are looking at becoming a professional photographer, then I think you need to define your market and then start making photographs to suit. The next challenge is to get people to buy those photographs. If your aim is to concentrate on capturing and selling photographs of pelicans for pocket money then I think you're off to a good start. But if you are looking at making a reasonable living from photography then you will have to produce stronger collection of photographs with a broader appeal.

Photography is becoming ever more difficult to make a living from, particularly as DSLR cameras become cheaper and easier to use. That said, everybody has a right to follow their dreams. Worst-case scenario you will get poor quickly! But at least you'll be able to say you gave it a go.

All the best,

Anthony.
