Hi Ron,
Thanks for sending this photo! I think most people like photographing sunrises and sunsets because of the warmth of the colours. For the better part of the day and night the sky is blue; its almost like at sunrise and sunset we get to feel the love!
Now as to how to improve your photos I'm going to make three suggestions.
First, before you make your photograph look for any distracting elements that might detract from the overall composition and feel of your photograph. The one distraction here is the spiderweb in the middle left of the frame. Without it the picture improves considerably.
Next, be careful about chopping off items at the edge of the frame. In this image you have chopped off the top of a plant at the right edge of the frame. I would have either included it or totally excluded it but it probably wouldn't have gone with a 50-50 option.
Third, try exeperimenting with the aperture to produce different depth of field settings. While it is nice to see these plants in focus with the background out of focus, I think this photo could also work with the background more in focus. Next time try making a photograph at f22 or maybe even f32 if your lens permits. A technique known as hyper focusing may be useul… this involves focusing just beyond the near subject you are photographing so that the “field” element of the depth of field is shifted to include the flowers on its near edge and more of the background in the rear. It sounds a little tricky but if you have a look on the Internet I think you will find some material about it.
I hope this is all a help,
Cheers, Anthony!
