Hi Gaelle,

Most people know my thoughts about sunset photographs. As much as we all love them because of the warm colours and the fuzzy emotions they can evoke, the fact is the sun is constantly rising and setting somewhere in the world every minute of the day. If you can’t get a good sunset photo today… come back tomorrow, there will always be another one.

Now, cynicism aside… to grow as a photographer you need to look beyond the obvious to see things that other people might not see.

For me, the magic in this photo is not in the sunset itself but in the stunning texture and colours on the water that make me just want to slowly slide on in and soak in the cool at the end of a hot day. The gentle gradation from the sunlight reflection down to the absolute darkness in the foreground is so alluring.

Now, the question for you, is how to make the texture and colours on that water into an interesting photograph?

This is where patience, luck and more often than not, good visual skills come into play. You need to be in this position ready to make the photograph when the key element presents itself within the frame.

This might be a boat reflected in the water or a pair of water birds flying low through the frame. I could even imagine a person lying on their back in this water as if floating on the light

Look beyond the obvious, be ready for anything and moments like this will become even more magical.

Cheers, Anthony
