Hi John,
Flinders Street Station is to Melbourne as the Harbour Bridge is to Sydney… which is a bit of a pity really! Once upon a time it was probably one of the biggest building in our city, but now it is has been hidden by high-rises. There is not much chance of that happening to the harbour bridge any time soon!
Like the bridge, Flinders Street Station is probably photographed 1000 times a day by tourists, and most people will be trying to put their own take on the photographs.
The photograph that you have here has got some interesting elements to it. I quite like the coloured movement happening in the foreground, with the taxicab stretched in movement through the image.
What is a bit unfortunate though, is that the sky is so black it has swallowed up a lot of the architectural detail from the top of the building.
If you get a chance, I would go back to this same location, one nice evening…but this time go after sunset when there is still some colour left in the sky.
Try making a photograph every couple of minutes, making sure that the camera is on a tripod and you are using the same slow shutter speed used here (adjust the aperture and ISO to correct the exposure as required).
What you will discover is a moment between sunset and night-time when the exposure for the sky and the building lights are equally balanced.
If you get it right, the photograph should look a lot better.
Cheers,
Anthony
