Hi Caitlyn,

Placing flowers and other objects in front of a subject is good for adding depth to a photograph, but it also requires some attention to detail.

As much as I like the lighting and the overall feel to this image there is one small flaw… and that is the fact that we cannot see his girl’s chin or throat.

The interesting thing about human nature is that we like to see the shape of someone’s face and the chin is an essential part of that equation. If we cannot see the chin then we start to wonder why not… is there a problem that the photographer does not want us to see? Covering the throat can also be a problem to some people – it is a part of the body that none of us really want to have covered.

If I were making this image I would have been inclined to have the flowers in the foreground off to the side of the face rather than over the chin. That way we would still get a sense of perspective and the image would appear more natural.

Now, another thing you could have done here was get your sister to look directly at the camera. I would keep her face in a similar position but have her eyes looking to the left or right. This would almost make it look like she was engaging with someone else in the scene and that would make the situation more interesting from a story-telling perspective.

Hope this is a help for your next photo shoot!

Cheers,

Anthony.
