Hi Gary,
There are many different ways that you can photograph a portrait but, for me, the portraits I like most are those that have honesty to them. As I look at this image I get a feeling of sincerity from the subject, which in reality is as much as you can ask for from a photograph.
This is the sort of image that you would expect to see as part of the biography or an online profile of this individual. With those options in mind, there is not a lot that I would do to change the photograph.
One thing that you can ask yourself though, is how much does this reveal about this person's environment? Looking at this photograph, what else do we know about Françoise?
This is when the power of environmental portraiture takes on more importance. What would we have seen if you had used a slightly wider leans to reveal more of the space about Françoise? Would we discover the landscape he loves to be in? Would we see his work environment? What additional information would we discover about this man?
I think it would be possible to tell a few more stories about François… but for the moment this portrait is a good starting point.
Good effort,
Anthony.
