Hi Ben,
Thanks for sending in this photograph. Nowadays more and more people are using iPhones to make photographs and the reason is very simple; it is the camera that people always have with them.
Even though an iPhone camera is very simple compared to a DSLR cameras there are still some tricks that you can apply to it when making a photograph.
One of the simplest tricks is to touch an area of the photo on the screen where you think the photograph should either be lighter or darker. If you were to touch the left-hand side of the screen while making this photograph the overall picture would have been adjusted darker. By comparison, if you were to touch the right hand side of the picture the overall picture would probably have been a bit lighter.
Now, this picture would have been better had the sky been more evenly lit, but you were not that lucky in this instance. (And my guess is there was no chance of getting the captain to move the ship a little further to the east when making this photo).
Perhaps next time you are in this situation you could try making a panorama to include more of the left hand side of the scene. By doing this you can centre the brightest part of the picture in the centre of the frame and the resulting photograph will have more balance.
All the best saving up for your DSLR camera, and remember it is not the camera you buy that makes the difference, it is how you use it!
Cheers, Anthony.
