Most people think of exposure as an on/off switch… they can either see the photo on the back of the camera, which qualifies the exposure as good or the photo is too light or too dark because of a major mistake in the settings, in which case the photo is bad.
What the best professional photographers will tell you though, is that with each photograph, the exposure should be fine tuned to suit the scene. What is also worth noting is that some photographers will actually prefer a brighter photo while others (Bill Henson comes to mind) prefer to work more with a darker palette.
With this photo, my feeling is that you have the exposure a bit too bright and in doing so, the colours have become rather washed out.
In the reworked image below I have darkened the photo and added some contrast using Nik Software's HDR Efex Pro 2. In the same app I have also added a small amount of vignetting and some more saturation.
Have a look at the difference between the two images… I think you will find the darker tones and deep saturation of the colours make the image more interesting.
