Hi Paul,

One thing that you will learn about your eyes is that they like to see into the dark spaces. Deprive them of this opportunity and they become bored rather quickly.

This photograph illustrates that point rather well. For the moment we can see the sky and how beautiful it is, but it is almost too dark to see the pier and the detail in the landscape below it.

As an option, open up the image in Photoshop Elements and click the Shadow/Highlight control (PSE). Dial in some shadow adjustment and see how suddenly the foreground  becomes more visible and interesting. We can also see the repeating poles and structure, and all this makes for good composition. If you use Lightroom use the controls in the Develop module (Exposure, Brihghtness, etc) to lighten the shadows.
