Hi Mitchell,

A few thoughts come to mind as I look at this image and the first one is simpl,y “wow!" Despite most photographers making the move to digital, you are proving rather keen by working with a Fujifilm 6 x 17cm format camera.

While I admire your dedication for working in this format (I too still shoot some work on film using a Hasselblad 503 CX) I also think that it can cause its own degree of difficulty too. With any other camera I would have suggested zooming just a little bit wider to get more of the foreground, but you cannot do that with your particular camera. Your only other option would be to rock hop onto another vantage point where you can try to get a similar view.

I also note that the exposure was two minutes at f32 and 50 ISO. Was that with or without a filter? If so, I would have been inclined to remove the filter, just to get less blur in the water. Sometimes you can make water look too creamy in these situations.

Now, my final bit of advice does not actually pertain to this photograph but your own direction in photography.

You mention that you have taken inspiration from Peter Lik. Might I suggest that it is often too easy to fall into the trap of following in the footsteps of other photographers by copying their techniques and styles. You are rather young and rather committed to this sort of photography and so my advice would be to learn what you can from as many great landscape photographers as you can and then look for your own direction.

When I studied photography many years ago we were told that "you are better off being a first-rate “you” than a second-rate somebody else". Go and start finding your own vision… my hunch is you are capable of it.

Cheers,

Anthony
