Hi Allen,

Call me a square, but some days I think images just lend themselves to being square.

This image is a good example; you have shot it in the vertical, and yet I want to know more about what is happening to the left and the right of the frame.

I know that you have a wide enough lens, so next time you do this shoot put the camera into the horizontal and then try and see the image as a square.

While vertical images are often visually stronger, and horizontal images are more pastoral in their mood, I think the square format has a power of its own. It is a format that medium format photographers have explored for decades and yet we seem to ignore it these days.

One other problem I have with this image is the over darkened boundary between rock and sky at the top of the frame. It is okay to darken an image, but avoid taking it to black. As soon as you do that you are loosing all detail in that area, and then there is nothing to explore.

Aside from that, good effort.

Cheers,

Anthony
