Hi Dieter,
There is no doubting that the waterfront in Sydney is a visually exciting place, particularly on a slightly misty morning. Everything has almost come together for you in this image… but three things grab my attention.
The first is the small detail of the ferry in the back of the picture. I would have enjoyed the image a little more if this boat was just slightly more to the right… just enough so that it appeared directly between the two ferries in the left and right of the picture. With the ferry in the background just a little more to the right, you get separation from that large post… and that then gives you the sense that the boat is actually moving away from the wharf. There were two small options you could have applied to put this boat more central in the frame. One would be to move one step to the right. The other might have been to have simply waited a few more seconds to capture the image.
My second concern is to do with the tonality of the image. What you notice almost immediately about this image are the soft tones in the sunlight areas. What is perhaps not so in keeping with the tones of the photo are the heavier tones in the shadow area of the foreground. If you captured this image in RAW mode, then I would be inclined to use the adjustment brush in your preferred RAW convertor to add some brightness and pull back the contrast in the shadow areas of the picture. This will lift the overall brightness of the photograph and allow us to enjoy some of the detail in the shadow of the picture, particularly where there are people getting off the boat.
Now, there is one last small detail that you can adjust to improve the photo. Have a look at the lower left side of the photo. There is s small patch of highlights just along the vertical edge of the frame. My advice would be to clone this out. As soon as this is gone you will notice that you spend more time looking at the rest of the photo.
Hope this is a help!
Cheers, Anthony
