Hi Anna,

Of all the elements that go into making a good photograph, design is perhaps the most important.

A good photograph is no different to a sentence or a paragraph on page. Anyone can grab 100 words out of the dictionary and throw them together into a random order, but chances are they will not have a lot of meaning. To convey what you are trying to say to a subject you need to add structure.

In a photograph, we are not using words but we are organising the different visual elements in front of the camera.

In this photograph the four key elements we have are the dozen red tulips in sunlight, one yellow tulip, the green foliage and finally the two tulips in the darkest of shadows in the background. All of these elements can be put together to create different photographs with different meanings; it is your job though, to look for some meaning and convey that message in the photo.

Below is a cropped version of your photograph. I'd suggest you have another go at photographing this flower bed and look for some interesting variations on the theme.

Cheers, Anthony.
