Australia's best professional photographers announced
The Australian Institute of Professional Photography’s (AIPP) annual national awards, the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) have been announced, with Tasmanian Landscape photographer Matt Palmer named as the Australian Professional Photographer of the Year for 2019.
Palmer's four images, which also won the landscape category, showed the footprint of humans on the planet, reflected in climate change and other impacts on the natural environment.
“Three of the photographs are specifically of fire damage and regeneration from the 2019 Tasmanian fire season which saw 3.5% of the entire state burned by fire, including vital habitat and pristine forests," Palmer explained.
“To be announced as the 2019 AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year is an accolade I never thought I could achieve in my lifetime," he said.
Held in Sydney at the Royal Randwick Racecourse, the three days of APPA saw 1,647 photographic works judged. A panel of five judges assesses each entry, with prints given a score out of 100.
Images with a score of 95-100 are awarded 'Gold with Distinction', 90-94 are awarded 'Gold', 85-89 are awarded Silver with Distinction, and 80-84 are awarded Silver. Images with a score of 79 or lower are judged 'Below award standard'.
In 2019, 1,057 images were awarded silver or above, with just fourteen images recognised as Gold with Distinction.
