Pro photographer Ricardo Da Cunha discusses the evolution of a simple yet striking seascape.
This image was captured at Miners Beach in Port Macquarie on the mid-north coast of NSW. Port Macquarie’s rugged coastline is abundant with scenes such as this one, making it a popular location for seascape photographers.
With a tripod-mounted camera set-up, and with a remote in hand, I watched the sets of waves washing in and patiently waited for the perfect time to fire the shutter. I took a number of exposures in burst shooting mode and then selected the exposure with the optimum water movement circling around the foreground rock and pulling the viewer’s eye back into the ocean.
I find that a shutter speed of 0.8 seconds represents the best speed to convey the movement of the water whilst still preserving texture in scenes like this one. The rainbow was an added bonus that added strength to the image.
