Canon has announced the new Canon EOS 70D, a mid-range DSLR with touchscreen control, built-in Wi-Fi and a new 'Dual Pixel CMOS AF' sensor, which promises better AF performance when shooting in Live View and movie mode.

The redesigned 20.2-megapixel APS-C sensor is the first of its kind from Canon and allows each pixel on the sensor's surface to perform both imaging and phase-difference AF. Canon says that compared with Canon’s previous image-plane phase-difference AF, the new system realises "shorter focusing times, exceptional tracking performance and smooth autofocusing during movie shooting".

Positioned between the EOS 7D and the EOS 700D in the Canon lineup, the new model includes a 19-point AF system for conventional viewfinder focusing and can fire off up to seven frames per second for up to 65 JPEG shots or 16 Raw files. The camera offers an ISO range of 100-12,800, extendable to 25,600 in extreme low-light and the fully articulated 3-inch (77mm) LCD screen offers a resolution of 1,040,000 dots.

There's also built-in Wi-Fi (for cable-free image sharing and remote camera control from a smartphone or tablet) and the camera can capture Full HD (1920 x 1080p) video at a choice of frame rates including 30, 25, or 24fps.

Canon expects the EOS 70D to be available in Australia from early September 2013 with pricing set at dealer discretion.
