The Canon stand attracted plenty of visitors at this year’s CES with the unveiling of the Powershot G1X, the new flagship model in Canon’s compact camera lineup.

While many expected Canon to join the growing number of camera makers producing mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, the G1X suggests the company is headed in a different direction.

While the G1X has a lot in common with the Canon G12 it is a very different camera with a large 18.7 x 14mm, CMOS sensor inside. To put that in perspective the 14.3 megapixel sensor in the G1X is around 20% smaller than the sensors used in Canon’s consumer DSLRs, 6% larger than Four Thirds sensors, and 600% bigger than the sensor in the G12.

Key features include a 28-112mm-equivalent f2.8-5.8 lens, three-inch vari-angle LCD, 14-bit RAW images and, like the G12, a wide choice of manual control options.

Canon is predicting big things for the new model: “We expect it to shake up the compact category with DSLR users and compact camera upgraders taking advantage of the powerful performance that has not existed at this level or in this compact form,” said James Lai, Assistant Brand Manager – Digital Still Cameras, Canon Australia.

The Canon G1X is set for launch in March with Australian pricing yet to be announced. In the US it will be priced at US $799.
