Canon will release two new Powershot compacts in November, the S100 and SX40 HS. The new models debut Canon’s new DiG!C5 image processor which Canon claims is six times faster than DiG!C4 and results in better noise reduction, more accurate white balance and faster continuous shooting.
The Powershot S100 features a new 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, a noticeable step-up from the 10-megapixel CCD used in the camera’s predecessor, the S95. It features built-in stabilisation and houses a wide 24-120mm (equivalent) lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.0. It also offers GPS and a peak continuous shooting speed of 9.6 fps, though it can only manage eight JPEG frames in a single burst. Like the S95, the S100 offers a good choice of manual controls. A control-ring around the lens that can be set up to control any of a number of variables including shutter speed, aperture and ISO.
The Powershot SX40 HS combines a 12.1-megapixel CCD with a 24-840mm (equivalent) 35x optical zoom lens. There's also a 2.7-inch vari-angle LCD and like the S100 it includes built-in stabilisation and can record Full HD movies (1920 x 1080).
