In an ideal world, all digital images would exhibit both highlight areas and shadow areas. However in harsh lighting, detail is often hidden in dark shadows or becomes impossible to see in excessive brightness. It is possible to solve this problem with a High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature available in some cameras and certain image editing programs.

Peter Burian explains the general principle of high dynamic range photography and then discusses a specific example using Photoshop editing. After experimenting with the recommended advanced techniques you should be well on your way to achieving better photography and making images which are visually stunning and/or technically excellent.
