Leica has revealed the latest addition to its digital camera lineup, the Leica X Vario. The new compact features a high-performance 16.1-megapixel (effective 16.1), APS-C format, CMOS image sensor with a zoom lens covering a focal length range from 28 to 70 mm (35 mm equivalent).
The new German-made model shares several design characteristics of Leica's iconic M-system cameras including a top plate machined from solid aluminium, robust metal body and the use of high-grip leather trim. Users who like a fair degree of manual control will appreciate the aperture and shutter-speed dials on the top plate with zoom and focus rings around the lens.
Video recording is available in 1080p Full HD resolution at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Video data can be saved in MP4 format and uploaded to social media or mobile devices without the need for conversion.
On the back there's a 3-inch (76mm), 920,000-dot monitor but no optical or electronic viewfinder. An optional electronic viewfinder (EVF) is available.
The camera ships with Adobe Lightroom and is expected to retail for $3200 in Australia.
