Magnum workshops heading to Australia
For the first time in over five years, Magnum Photos will offer two workshops in Australia this May.

Offered in partnership with the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney, Magnum photographers Olivia Arthur and Bieke Depoorter will lead a 5-day programme focused on developing personal story ideas and refining practical knowledge.
Known for their in-depth and intimate storytelling approaches, both photographers will share their experience and advice in order for participants to advance their own practice, personally and professionally.
Participants will work towards a final public projection of their new body of work and group celebration.
5-Day Workshop with Bieke Depoorter
Over the five days, participants will take initial ideas or leads and develop them into tight cohesive bodies of work. With an emphasis on building genuine connections in a short time frame and developing a distinctive visual language, participants will push their own boundaries to create new and important work.
Through shooting tasks, reviews and editing sessions, Depoorter will encourage participants to engage with their subjects and push personal limits by emphasizing the importance of participation and collaboration.

For participants interested in exploring the relationship between photographer and subject, as well as establishing personal, authentic and ongoing visual dialogue, Depoorter will help guide projects to develop work that is relevant and meaningful.
Drawing on her own experience traveling through Russia and U.S engaging with strangers, to her most recent LiveLab work ‘Night Walk with Agata’ which was created in Paris, in a similar time frame as this workshop.
5-Day Workshop with Olivia Arthur
Through class discussions around photography’s ability to represent and connect audiences, participants will develop their practice via focused individual and group feedback sessions in order to define their own photographic style.

Each participant will work on a story during the workshop that they will be able to continually revisit and refine. Projects may be ongoing or started fresh, with the overall goal for the week to challenge student’s abilities in order to reach new levels and create innovative and engaging work.
Through Arthur’s previous work and in particular recent projects including ‘Children of Europe’ and ‘Hull, Portrait of a City’ which heavily focused on communities and portraiture, students who wish to embed themselves within a particular group or district in Sydney would benefit from Arthur’s experienced guidance and feedback.
