Congratulations to Robert Schirato who has won our March 'Buildings' photo competition with his image 'Looking up at Australia 108', as selected by our guest judge, the incredible Sydney photographer Douwe (Dex) Dijkstra.
Here's what Dex had to say about the image:
"Buildings is a great competition theme to judge. I love architecture and there was a vast array of architectural styles on show. So, it was a joy going through all the images on the impressive shortlist.
I picked 'Looking up at Australia 108’ by Robert Schirato as the winning image.
The angle is great: standing right in front of the building looking up, results in it looking very imposing. The building demands your full attention.
The confident crop and strong composition suits the abstract look and feel of the subject. Love how the vertical lines are interrupted by the horizontal 'wavy' panels and then continue as your eyes go up towards the top of the structure.
The contrast between the warm golden tones and the fresh blue colour is great. The different textures (strong architectural lines vs. whispy clouds) also add great contrast. Beautiful image. Congrats Robert!"
Dex also chose two honourable mentions:
Awesome light and the inclusion of the man and his dog adds a beautiful sense of scale.
Strong and balanced square composition, perfect symmetry and surprising angle.
Over on Facebook, Nicola Robson's image A man and his dog alsotook out the People's choice vote, with 112 votes at competition close on Wednesday last week, narrowly beating Kirsty Collister's This way or that with 92 votes.
For their efforts, Robert and Nicola take home a one year print and digital subscription, respectively, to either AP or Capture magazine.
Finally, our April comp is open for entries now. It's sponsored by the good people at at Custom Wall Prints, and you can enter here.
