The newest addition to Olympus' lineup of mirrorless camera bodies, the PEN E-P5, features a 16-megapixel sensor, built-in WiFi, a top shutter speed of 1/8000s, fast autofocus and five-axis image stabilisation. The retro-styled interchangeable-lens camera takes its styling cues from the original Olympus Pen F, which was launched in the 1960s, and like that camera includes all-metal body construction.
The E-P5 is the first Olympus camera to include built-in Wi-Fi and is compatible with iOS and Android devices. The camera’s LCD can be set to display on a phone or tablet where the camera can be controlled by touch. This is useful for self-portraits and remotely shooting subjects like birds that are easily startled.
The camera's in-body five-axis image stabilisation system has evolved
since it was first introduced in the Olympus OM-D E-M5, and can even
make adjustments when the camera is panning, in horizontal and vertical
orientations.
The camera is equipped with a 1.04-million-dot tilting touch-screen LCD that can be adjusted to face upwards at an 80-degree angle and downwards at a 50-degree angle. For photographers who prefer composing with an eyepiece, an optional VF-4 electronic viewfinder offers a resolution of 2.36 million dots.
Control wheels on the front and back of the camera can be set to control aperture and shutter speed or, by moving a switch, changed to control ISO and white balance.
The E-P5 is compatible with the full range of Micro Four Thirds lenses including newly announced black versions of the M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8, 45mm f1.8 and 75mm f1.8 lenses.
Australian pricing is yet to be announced though in the US the camera will retail for US$999 body only.
