Silicon Valley startup Light has unveiled an innovative new camera design that incorporates 16 individual lenses and sensors, 10 of which are fired simultaneously to produce a single high-quality image, up to 52 megapixels in resolution.
The idea of combining images from multiple lenses is to improve detail, resolution and dynamic range while simultaneously reducing noise in low-light images.
“The L16 is the first multi-aperture computational camera that packs DSLR quality and capability into a device that fits in your pocket,” claims a Light spokesperson. “The L16 is smaller, lighter, less expensive, and provides better image quality than any camera in its price class.”
Similar to Lytro's light field camera, the L16 also allows users to adjust focus and depth of field after a photo is taken, all the way to f/1.2.

Other key features include a 5-inch touch display, 35-150mm equivalent focal length, 4K video recording, IP54 water and dust resistance, integrated GPS and accelerometer, Wi-Fi, and a dual-tone LED flash.
Light says the L16 will go on sale in late September 2016 with a price tag of US$1,699.
