Photographers from around the world, including Australia, have 'competed' to capture the next background wallpaper for Microsoft Windows.

It's no mean feat - Bliss, the default wallpaper of Microsoft Windows XP, by Charles O’Rear is often called the most viewed photo in history.

Whitney Wolf, Superdigital Director of Strategy, the creative agency that organised the project, described Windows wallpapers as "legendary across the internet."

“It’s a legacy we wanted to preserve, while also empowering creators to show off the beauty of their home country that not everyone gets to see first hand,” she said.

Australian photographer Zac Watson chose Horizontal Falls, in the Kimberley region in Western Australia, for his image.

Rather than choosing one winner, Microsoft has made all seven images captured as part of the project available for download.
