While Sony's new A3000 looks like a DSLR it has much more in common with Sony's smaller, mirrorless NEX cameras. Encased in a conventional DSLR body, the new model features a 20.1-megapixel APS-C sensor and a built-in electronic viewfinder. Aimed at beginner photographers the camera will be priced at $499 with an 18-55mm lens.

The interchangeable-lens camera uses E-mount lenses from the NEX series, rather than the larger A-mount lenses used by Sony's true DSLR camera bodies.

Key features include a 3in (76mm) LCD with 230,400-dot resolution, optical image stabilisation, Full HD video capabilities (1080/60i or 1080/24p), built-in flash and 15 Picture Effect settings including Retro Photo, Miniature Camera and Partial Color.

The A3000 ships with an 18-55mm zoom lens and will be available in Australia from September 2013 with an SRP of $499.
