Sony has added a new model to its lineup of translucent-mirror DSLR cameras. The Alpha 57 replaces the Alpha 55 and boasts faster continuous shooting speeds (increased  from 10 to 12 frames per second) and a wider choice of frame rates when capturing Full HD videos (up to 60p when shooting 1980 x 1080p video).

Other features include an upgraded electronic viewfinder, 15-point AF system (with three cross-type sensors) and a 16.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor.

Unlike most cameras, Sony’s unorthodox translucent-mirror design allows incoming light to pass through to the image sensor while simultaneously reflecting a portion of light up to the AF sensor.

The camera will retail for $899 (body only) and is expected to go on sale in April.

The launch of the A57 coincides with the release of a new LED light, the HVL-LE1. It has an output of 1800 Lux at 0.5m, is adjustable from 10-100% and uses a standard flash shoe connector.
