Sony has announced the Alpha NEX-5T, its first interchangeable-lens camera with Near Field Communication (NFC). The new model replaces the NEX-5R and shares the same 16.1-megapixel, APS-sized sensor and 3-inch (75mm) tilting touchscreen LCD. The key difference between the two models is the inclusion of NFC, a technology that allows compatible devices to communicate with each other when they are touched together. A connection is made when a smartphone touches the camera, allowing immediate image and video sharing between the devices.
For devices without NFC (no current Apple iOS device uses NFC) users can transfer images and videos using Wi-Fi and Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app for iOS and Android platforms.
The NEX-5T combines phase-detect and contrast-detect autofocus with 99 phase-detection AF points arrayed on the image sensor. Sony says the phase system quickly detects subject distance and locks focus while contrast-detect confirms extremely fine, precise details. Top continuous shooting speed for the camera is 10 frames per second.
Sony says the NEX-5T will be available in Australia from September 2013 with a suggested retail price of $899 (single lens) or $1,149 (twin lens).
The launch of the NEX-5T coincides with the announcement of three new E-mount lenses for Sony's lineup of NEX-series cameras: Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm F4 ZA OSS ($1199); Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS ($799); and Sony E 50mm F1.8 ($399).
The new lenses, which will be available in September, boost the total number of E-mount lenses to 16.
