Sony has announced the coming release of the Alpha SLT-A58, a mid-range interchangeable-lens camera that replaces both the A37 and A57 models. The new camera features a redesigned 20-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 480,000-dot OLED viewfinder.

Unlike ordinary DSLR cameras, which place a moving mirror in front of the sensor, Sony's SLT cameras use Translucent Mirror technology to allow some light to pass through the mirror onto the main image sensor while reflecting some light onto a separate autofocus sensor. Sony says the design makes it easier to deliver faster continuous shooting speeds and more accurate AF (in stills and movie mode) compared to conventional tilting-mirror DSLRs.

Key specs include in-camera image stabilisation, a top ISO of 16,000 (extendable to 25,600), 1920 x 1080 (50i or 24p) video, 5fps continuous shooting and a fully articulated 2.7-inch, 1,440,000-dot LCD screen. It weighs 492g (with batteries) and measures 129 x 95 x 78mm.

It also offers a selection of 15 artistic ‘in-camera’ treatments, such as Toy Camera, Mono and Partial Colour. The A57 is expected to be available in Australia in April 2013.
