Tested Sony a99 single Lens Camera

Peter Burian tested this high-tech 24.3 MP Single Lens Translucent full-frame camera from Sony.

A successor to the full-frame a900 digital SLR, the 24.3 megapixel a99 is light years ahead of those models in terms of technology.

Most importantly, this pro-calibre camera with a huge 23.9 x 35.8mm sensor, omits the pentaprism and the moving reflex mirror. Instead, it uses a fixed translucent mirror and electronic viewfinder like all other current Alpha models.

This set up allows for full-time, uninterrupted Live View - in still photo or video capture - on either the articulated LCD screen or the EVF. As well, phase-detection autofocus is available in Live View and Movie mode; it’s faster than the contrast detection AF that DSLRs typically use in such modes.

This flagship of the line resembles the a77 (with the more typical 15.6x23.5mm sensor) and uses similar controls, but it’s not equipped with a built-in flash. The a99 benefits from all of the latest Sony technology, including advanced Movie mode with many options, a unique dual AF system, a superior sensor and processor and numerous high-tech functions.
