Antarctica Photography Expedition 5th Feb - 4th March 2026

Comments Comments

Run by the experienced team at New Zealand Photography Workshops, and departing from New Zealand, this exclusive photography expedition offers a rare opportunity to explore and capture breathtaking images of one of Earth’s most remote and pristine marine ecosystems—an untouched region of Antarctica that very few expeditions reach.

The Ross Sea

Experience and photograph the otherworldly beauty of the Ross Sea region, where towering icebergs, vast glaciers, and endless ice fields create a truly ethereal landscape.

This remote wilderness is home to an abundance of rare wildlife, including Emperor Penguins, orca, seals, and soaring albatrosses.

The dramatic landscapes that awed early explorers—Mt Erebus, Mt Discovery, and the Transantarctic Mountains—are just as inspiring today as they were a century ago.

Penguin rookeries still occupy the same sites described by early biologists, their numbers fluctuating year to year.

Seals, no longer hunted for food, rest undisturbed on ice floes, while whales, once ruthlessly hunted in the 1920s, are now returning.

Snow Petrels, Wilson’s Storm Petrels, Antarctic Prions, and South Polar Skuas all breed in this seemingly inhospitable environment.

You’ll explore the historic huts of early Antarctic explorers Scott, Shackleton, and Borchgrevink and witness the breathtaking scale of the Ross Ice Shelf—the largest ice shelf in Antarctica.

The Subantarctic islands

Our journey also takes us to the Subantarctic Islands, where stops at The Snares, Auckland, Macquarie, and Campbell Islands offer incredible wildlife photography opportunities in one of the world’s most dynamic ecosystems.

These remote islands provide the rare chance to photograph five penguin species, including the endemic Royal Penguin and the vast King Penguin colonies of Macquarie Island.

You’ll also witness Southern Royal and Light-mantled Sooty Albatross soaring overhead, while colossal elephant seals dominate the rugged shores.

"In February 2023 I undertook an amazing, month-long journey into the southern realms of this marvellous and beautiful planet, travelling on the Heritage Adventurer with Richard Young of New Zealand Photography Workshops. In August this year, I exhibited many of my Antarctica images at the Red Gallery in Fitzroy North, Melbourne. This was immensely satisfying and a measure for me of the rewarding experience provided by Richard and New Zealand Photography Workshops" - Ross Kimber, Solo Traveller
