New Zealand Photography Workshops is running three amazing and unique photography trips in winter this year.

Winter Landscape Photo Tour - 26th July - 1st August 2025

The Winter Landscape Photo Tour offers an incredible opportunity to New Zealand’s High Country and the Southern Alps at the height of their winter beauty.

Timed to provide the most spectacular conditions for winter landscape photography; you’ll capture the mighty snow-covered peaks and misty mornings beside frosty lakes.

Starting in Queenstown we journey to the Mackenzie Country, where we will photograph around Twizel and Aoraki/Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak.

We will explore the remote valleys by 4WD, which offers some fantastic winter photography opportunities and the breathtaking majesty of the mountains.

We continue to the serene Ashburton Lakes, home to some of the most awe-inspiring winter landscapes. This area features mountain views, alpine lakes, beautiful rivers, and elegantly placed trees.

We’ll stay two nights at a lodge on a high-country station for a unique experience immersed in the landscape.

Style and Composition – Winter Retreat - 4th - 10th August 

Richard Young has designed and developed this week-long winter retreat to offer you the chance to immerse yourself in developing your style and composition skills.

The goal of the retreat is to help you develop and refine your approach to self-expression and style, hone your compositional skills and produce some stunning fine art prints that showcase your unique style and vision.

Richard and Glen Howey will lead a series of talks and tuition that will challenge your approach to nature and the landscape and teach you skills that enable you to grow and evolve as a photographer.

At sunset and sunrise each day, you’ll create new work as you explore your approach to landscape photography.

From mastering the wide vista to producing intimate landscape images, you’ll have the opportunity to revisit the same locations and build a collection of work that can ultimately be crafted into a portfolio showcasing your unique style and vision.

Winter Light & Land - 20th August - 1st September

Experience the untouched natural beauty of New Zealand on this wonderful 12-day tour to photograph the best South Island landscapes in winter!

During this tour you’ll photograph spectacular and diverse landscapes; from glistening glaciers, majestic mountains, deep fiords, ancient forests, and rugged coastline.

Guided by Richard Young, who has designed this tour to share some of his favourite locations and experiences at a time of the year that offers the most spectacular conditions for landscape photography. You’ll capture the mighty snow-covered peaks and misty mornings beside frosty lakes.

Highlights include Aoraki Mt Cook National Park and the Dark Sky Reserve, the stunning, wild, and remote West Coast with its incredible coastlines and beech forests, the majestic towering peaks of Fiordland’s Milford Sound, and the unique pancake rock formations of Punakaiki.

As well as the iconic vistas, we will also visit some off-the-beaten-track locations in the New Zealand backcountry around Ashburton Lakes, the Mackenzie Country, and Wanaka; offering the finest winter photography. We will take 4WD trips into remote valleys to capture some impressive backcountry vistas, mountain views, and endless winter photography opportunities.

The tour has been designed to include some amazing experiences including a two-night lodge stay on a high-country station to be immersed in the landscape. We’ll also spend two nights in Milford Sound, at a luxury lodge, the heart of the Fiordland wilderness. We’ll even take you to one of the best Central Otago wineries for a wine tasting along the way.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to New Zealand or a seasoned local photographer, the tour offers an unforgettable experience and some of the finest winter photography.
