Isabelle Rebetzke , A sense of belonging (JUNIOR 2020)

This photo was taken early this year for a assignment around the topics of isolation and a sense of belonging in the bonegilla refugee camp located near Albury. Suitcases like this were set up all around the camp, placed in dusty corners and at the end of beds. I think it reflected a sense of being in a grey area that many residents must have felt, of having to pack your entire life into a couple of suitcases and leave your home and culture behind. Many former residents spoke about a sense of being in between, no longer belonging to their homelands - but not yet apart of Australia.
