Matthew Barrett, Early Risers (Junior 2021)

Something about this image perfectly embodies the story behind it. Myself and my mate woke up incredibly early in the morning to try and catch a sunrise at manly headland where we had heard of a secluded army bunker just meters away from a cliff face. We ended up trekking 30 minutes from the car park, underestimating the time it would take to get their and almost completely missing the sunrise. Incredibly we found out way to the bunker and climbed on top of it to watch the incredible sunrise. I captured my friend’s relief as the first pieces of light hit both our faces. I love this photo because it perfectly embodies the characteristics of myself and my mate as we sought out to see the sunrise.
