Karen Calder, Feeding the Family (TRAVEL 2020)
On the islands Pura and Ternate in the remote Alor archipelago of Indonesia, the bamboo weaving of a fish trap or “bubu” is an artisanal craft. This cradftsmanship has been passed down through generations of fathers and sons where such tradition exists as if suspended in time. These remote villages rely heavily on the daily fish catch, either for immediate consumption, or for preserving the catch (salting and sun drying method) for months when the sea is too rough for fishing. Grandfathers and fathers have experienced first hand the role of a healthy reef for sustaining fish populations. They now teach their sons and daughters sustainable fishing practices for marine preservation so families continue to be fed.
