Annie Lu, Guiding Cones (TRAVEL 2024)

From its very first discovery, Antarctica is a daunting desert that calls to adventurers and explorers. While we document the trails and meals of the early explorers and visitors, we give very little thought to one of the most mundane yet life-saving object that is used in Antarctic travels - the neon cone. Like the bright-coloured flags that were used as markers for food and emergency shelter by the likes of Shackleton, these cones are used to guide all scientists, visitors and on occasion curious locals to and from their destinations inside the vast white Antarctic continent as they explore.
