Catherine Reading, Ice Jewels on Diamond Beach (LANDSCAPE 2020)
The dramatic and surreal appearance of ice on Diamond Beach at sunrise. Diamond Beach is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland, located beside Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon on the south coast. The Icelandic name of the beach is Breidamerkursandur, but it is commonly known as Diamond Beach due to the unique appearance of the ice sparkling on the black sand. Icebergs continually break off from the Breidamerkurjokull glacier and float on Jokulsarlon lagoon. Eventually the icebergs float down the river and drift out to sea where the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean break them down further and force them ashore to lie on the black sand.
