Christine Wilkinson, Menindee Lakes Rising (Single Shot 2021)
After an extended period of drought, the Menindee Lakes, located in the south west of NSW, have burst with new life and regeneration, following a surge of flood waters from Northern NSW. Fed by the often sporadic flow of the Darling River, they have many demands from environmental, irrigation and domestic water usage, while providing a significant wetland bird and wildlife habitat. I felt particularly lucky to witness this event. At sunset I found Lake Parmaroo dressed by heavy cloud. As I watched, low colour rose over the horizon, radiating over the calm and swollen waters , glazing the surface and reflecting the stark silhouette of the trees.
