John Bean, "Platypus Encouter Swollen Creek" (Wildlife and Animal 2017)

Platypus encounter! Met our Aussie Monotreme plying the cascading waters of a swollen flooded creek in Tasmania. It saw me on the bank, stared for a moment, then actually came closer as I minimised my movement. Then it resumed its feeding routine of submerging (eyes closed), probing with its bill (electroreception), then surfacing to eat. Followed was the remarkable opportunity to walk quietly next to the platypus in its routine for a few minutes. Then it moved away and disappeared into the bubbling cascades. Nikon D800, Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f2.8G ED, hand held.
