Fester Demos, Precarious Provenance (CREATIVE 2024)

"Precarious Provenance" is a self-portrait, gelatin silver print crafted through a hybrid photographic process, blending traditional and contemporary techniques. I designed and crafted the props, backdrops, costumes and makeup. The image was captured on black and white film with a medium format camera, the piece comprises three exposures, scanned and combined into a single image printed onto transparency film. Then, taken into the darkroom concluding in a contact print, paying homage to the process-driven experimental techniques of early 20th-century Surrealists. This artwork explores the concept of precarious provenance, where the theft of an artwork creates gaps in its ownership timeline, rendering its value and authenticity uncertain. It also serves as a commentary on the devaluation of images in today's fast-paced digital era, where plagiarism is and intellectual property theft is rampant.
