Genevieve Ackland, Railwaymen (People 2021)

'Railwaymen' is a series of portraits featuring some of Melbourne’s longest-serving train drivers, photographed in the disused second and third floors of the heritage-listed Flinders Street Station in the heart of the city. Captured on black and white 35mm film using a 1964 Rangefinder camera, the photographs depict drivers with 40+ years of railway industry experience, pictured in the iconic sites of the long abandoned ballroom, the old gymnasium, and the infamous 11ft clock faces of the clock tower. These powerful and intimate portraits reveal the human faces behind Melbourne’s railways, and capture the knowledge and wisdom of decades of experience from gentlemen who started in the railways when they were 15 to 21 years old.
