Tony Wells, Roadkill (Single Shot 2019)

This wallaby is one of an estimated 4 million native animals killed on Australian roads each year. It is a national tragedy compounded by the fact that female marsupials can have surviving young in their pouches, which either die or are orphaned. I hope this photograph, taken in Bruny Island, highlights the need to take care while driving on country roads - particularly at dawn and nighttime when wildlife are active. I would also like to acknowledge the selfless work undertaken by volunteer wildlife carers who rescue, rehabilitate and release the survivors. They deserve our admiration and support.
