Lauren Manser, Scar (SINGLE SHOT 2022)
Six months ago I was hospitalised with a Rickettsial infection. I had unknowingly been bitten by an tick whilst hiking in Tasmania's South West. Doctors had difficulty identifying the infection and as a result my treatment was very delayed. A gland on the top of my leg became necrotic and needed to be removed and my organs were beginning to show signs of damage. If left untreated, a Rickettsial infection and lead to sepsis. Due to the size of the incision, the wound on my leg was left open to heal and I wore vac pump to prevent bacteria becoming embedded in the wound. I spent two months recovering from surgery and the aftermath. Although at the time it was an incredibly challenging ordeal, I am so grateful it happened. The experience has had the most profound influence on the way I view life and interact with the people around me. I am a better person because of it. At first I didn't like the scar, it's big and made me feel unattractive. But now I smile everytime I see it. Because now I have a lifetime sticker which reminds me of what is truly important in life.
